The engawa veranda and a stone lantern at night

A night in the house of the village headman. Shoya no Sato Kominka Tanaka

SHOYA NO SATO  KOMINKA TANAKA — ISUMI, CHIBA SCROLL
The main house beyond a Japanese pond garden

One house. One party a day.

The Seki family served as retainers to the Toki clan in the age of the samurai, and as shoya — village headmen — through the Edo period.

Keeping only the original timber frame, we have refitted their old residence in natural materials for the way we live now.

The house and its thousand-tsubo garden belong to a single party each day.

The Mark

A name, set in the shape of a house.

Our family crest takes the form of an old farmhouse. Look closely, and two characters are hidden within it.

Residence

The Residence

Massive beams and pillars polished by time. Beyond the glass doors, a Japanese garden spreads out before you, and koi drift slowly through the pond. A tatami hall, a long dining table and well-appointed bedrooms — all beneath a single roof.

Bath

The Bath

Well water, softened until it feels like silk on the skin. An indoor bath framed by swaying bamboo, and an open-air bath beneath the sky. Let time slip quietly away.

Dining

Dining

The bounty of the Sotobo coast and the Isumi countryside. A private chef takes over the kitchen to prepare the day's table — or grill spiny lobster and abalone yourself in the garden pavilion.

Pleasures

Evenings

As night falls, the bamboo grove and garden trees are lit. Slip from the heat into the cool night water, gather around the bonfire in the back garden, and let the night grow late.

The outdoor pool and lit bamboo grove

Bamboo Grove Pool

An outdoor pool with automatic filtration. At night, the lit bamboo is mirrored on the water.

Water poured over sauna stones

Private Sauna

A tent sauna by the pool — the pool becomes your cold plunge, the night air your cool-down, all to yourselves.

The Lantern Garden

The Japanese garden at night, seen from the engawa, with soft light glowing in the stone lanterns.

Bonfire

The Bonfire

On the lawn of the back garden lies a fire pit edged with Oya stone. Stack the logs high and the flames rise into the night sky, sparks drifting like stars. Fireworks in summer; firelight through autumn and winter.
